Declaring big tech companies, public utilities

I believe America and western civilization, are hurtling towards authoritarianism, in large part due to big tech companies trampling on their fellow citizens’ speech, and acting in a discriminatory fashion against their political enemies. I believe by declaring big tech, utilities, and outlawing discriminatory behavior on their part (on the basis of politics and religion) big tech can be reined in, and the liberties of America’s and western civilization’s citizens, can be rescued – for now.

I believe there is a significant way that the big tech monopolies and cartels can be broken up: declare them as utilities, and mandate that they allow other companies to provide services on their platforms. This can be done by the FCC, and it would allow the federal government to quickly mitigate their discriminatory behavior against conservatives, and others they consider their political enemies. The above move would also be pro-consumer, by providing more choices and technological innovation in the tech market.

I also believe that the FCC should write rules against discrimination by tech utilities, on the basis of politics and religion. The FCC should also outlaw political collusion among tech utilities.

I believe the FCC could declare a tech product, a utility, if it has more than a certain number of users (for example, if it has over 50 million users).

The above should go a long way to establish fairness in the tech sector, and to help extend Americans’ constitutional rights, to private entities, that have power and wealth, comparable to governments. If the opportunity arises, the above rules could be enshrined into law by Congress.

Google for example could be required to maintain a base search engine and set of services, that are overseen by private accreditation firms, which routinely audit Google’s base search engine and services for fairness in the areas of politics, religion, etc. (The accreditation firms would also investigate individual claims of political discrimination and unfairness on the part of Google.) Google would then allow other companies to provide services on its platform. These companies would be able to provide competing general or vertical (for example, medical, aeronautical engineering) search services, and maybe also advertising services.

Facebook for example would be regulated in a similar manner, and companies would be able to provide services on top of the platform. Competing companies would be able to create accounts for users, whose data would flow between both companies’ services, allowing messages and other data to be seen across companies on the platform. Facebook would for example not be allowed to discriminate against messages from other companies on its platform, on the basis of politics, religion, etc.

I believe the above is a great way to quickly mitigate the threat big tech is now becoming to the personal freedoms of Americans. The above would also create more competition, which should lead to more choices and innovation for consumers, in the tech platform market.
