What is more important? You, or the constitution?

Christ said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” By that, Christ meant the first concern of God is man, and things (including rules) that were created, were created for the benefit of man. Therefore if a rule ceases to benefit man, then it should be discarded.

This is how we should view the constitution. It is a document. If followed, it ensures the liberties of its citizens, within a functioning society. If the society breaks down to the point where adhering to the document undermines its citizens’ liberties and rights, it should be discarded – or at least followed, only to the extent it is beneficial to its citizens. This is the same as what Thomas Jefferson said.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness… it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

So, every righteous person’s obligation is to the well being of his fellow man - not to the constitution per se. And when service to the constitution is no longer beneficial to your fellow man (under righteous circumstances) then you should no longer follow it. That is how Christ was able to remain righteous, in spite of the fact the he healed on the Sabbath - in technical violation of the law. (Christ lived according to a ‘righteousness by faith’ state of being, where because of his faith, he was automatically lead by the Holy Spirit, who organically directed him to live according to God’s righteous will. This state of being supersedes direct adherence to the law, and makes one no longer subject to the dictates of the law.)

So if you see that adherence to the constitution is not delivering righteous results (because of say, systemic corruption), then per Christ / natural law, and Thomas Jefferson, it is reasonable to seek remedy beyond the constitution. The U.S. constitution is not the end all: rather it is your and your fellow man's state of being.
